Rivet Setters & Presses

Buy the tool around a documented hardware system. “Rivet setter” is a category; compatibility lives in the profile, diameter, and attachment details.

The essential bench

Five tools, five separate jobs.

A clean setup does not need to be complicated. It does need every contact surface to have a clear purpose.

01

Hand setter

Shapes or supports the upper component when struck. Its face must match the rivet construction and cap profile.

Record:family, face shape, cap diameter
02

Anvil or lower die

Supports the visible lower face. A mismatched recess can leave a ring, flatten a dome, or let the work rock.

Record:recess diameter and radius
03

Hole punch

Creates the shaft opening. Select it from the post diameter and test fit—not from the cap diameter.

Record:actual cutting diameter
04

Bench press

Guides upper and lower dies on one axis. The press still needs the correct die attachment and rivet-specific profiles.

Record:mount, thread, shank, clearance
05

Calipers

Measure the compressed stack, shaft, post, and caps. A written measurement is more useful than a kit’s size nickname.

Record:stack and hardware dimensions

Choose a workflow

Hand setter or bench press?

Neither label guarantees a better result. Choose the setup you can align, support, document, and repeat safely.

Portable workflow

Hand setter + anvil

Consider it when

  • You are making samples or occasional small batches.
  • The hardware maker identifies a matched hand setter.
  • You have a stable striking surface and can keep the tool square.

Watch closely

  • Setter angle between taps
  • Anvil support under decorative caps
  • Wear or damage on striking tools
Bench workflow

Press + matched dies

Consider it when

  • You want guided upper/lower alignment for repeated samples.
  • The die attachment and intended rivet profile are documented.
  • The press has clearance for the actual project shape.

Watch closely

  • Upper and lower die concentricity
  • Adjustment and stroke control
  • Pinch points and operating instructions

Die compatibility

A press listing is not a complete rivet system.

Before buying a press or die, make a one-page compatibility record. If the listing omits the attachment dimensions or supported rivet profile, ask the seller or maker rather than guessing.

Tool questions

Short answers before you buy.

Can one concave setter handle every domed cap?

Do not assume so. Two caps can look similar while having different diameters or radii. Use the die or setter specified for the exact rivet family whenever that information exists.

Should the punch equal the cap diameter?

No. The starting hole is selected from the shaft or post diameter, not the visible cap diameter. Confirm the maker’s instruction and test the fit on scrap.

Does a press include the dies I need?

Not necessarily. Treat the press body, die attachment, and included die set as separate line items to verify on the current listing.

Can dies move between press brands?

Only when the attachment interface and operating geometry are explicitly compatible. Similar appearance is not enough evidence.
