01 / Prepare
Start with a complete scrap stack.
Recreate the finished assembly using the same leather, skiving, fold, lining, adhesive, and reinforcement. A single loose offcut is not a representative test if the final rivet passes through several layers.
Bench setup
- Calipers or another reliable thickness gauge
- Scratch awl or removable marking method
- Punch sized for the rivet shaft
- Cutting board or appropriate punching surface
- Rivet-matched setter and supported anvil or die
- Eye protection and a stable work surface
02 / Mark and punch
Make the hole intentional.
- 1Mark the center.
Use a template, wing dividers, or measured reference lines. Confirm edge clearance visually before punching.
- 2Support the leather.
Place the stack on a surface intended for punching. Keep the punch perpendicular to the work.
- 3Punch a clean opening.
Start with the shaft diameter specified for the rivet. The post should pass through without tearing, but should not wobble loosely.
- 4Clear the slug.
Remove fibers and inspect both faces. A ragged or stretched hole can make alignment harder before the setting tool ever touches the cap.
That can stretch the leather, scrape a finish, or make the post lean. Recheck the shaft measurement and use the correct punch.
03 / Assemble
Seat the parts before applying force.
Insert the post through the clean hole, place the mating cap or component squarely, and press the parts together by hand only as the maker directs. Both faces should be supported and centered in the matching anvil or die profile.
Square alignment
Post perpendicular, caps centered, leather flat, matched support directly beneath.
Stop before setting
Leaning post, offset cap, rocking stack, or an unsupported decorative face.
04 / Hand setter
Use controlled, centered strikes.
- Place the supported cap in the anvil recess.Confirm it sits fully in the matching profile rather than on the recess edge.
- Hold the setter vertical.Its shaped face should center on the upper cap. Keep fingers clear of the strike area.
- Begin with light, deliberate taps.Check alignment between taps. Increase force only within the tool maker’s instructions.
- Stop when the joint is seated.More force is not automatically better. Inspect instead of chasing a flatter cap.
05 / Bench press
Let the dies establish alignment.
- Install the intended upper and lower dies.Confirm the attachment, cap profile, and rivet family before placing material in the press.
- Dry-align with no final piece in place.Bring the dies close enough to confirm they meet concentrically, following the press instructions.
- Center the scrap sample.Support both faces and keep the leather flat against the lower die.
- Apply force progressively.Use the maker’s adjustment and operating method; inspect the first sample before repeating.
06 / Inspect
Read both faces and the leather around them.

Troubleshooting observations are diagnostic prompts, not proof of a single cause. Change one variable at a time on scrap.
07 / Move to the project
Only repeat a sample you can identify.
When a scrap set is square, secure, and visually acceptable for your design, label the rivet, setter or dies, punch size, stack measurement, and setting adjustment. Keep the coupon with the project notes.
